Answer
For citations, a DOI URL should start with: https://doi.org/ and continue with the DOI itself, which always begins with the number 10 (for example: 10.12930/NACADA-18-30)
DOI's are unique identifiers that create a persistent link to online content. In the reference entry, they are the last element and should be formatted as hyperlinks, for example:
Lienemann, B. A., & Stopp, H. T. (2013). The association between media exposure of interracial relationships and attitudes toward interracial relationships. Journal of Applied Social Psychology, 43, E398–E415. https://doi-org.hacc.idm.oclc.org/10.1111/jasp.12037
It is recommended to use the DOI whenever possible. If no DOI is present, it is OK to include the URL instead.
How do I create an acceptable DOI link?
When accessing articles through library databases and online journals, the DOI link provided might include information unique to HACC students and faculty.
For example:
The association between media exposure of interracial relationships and attitudes toward interracial relationships
Brianna A. Lienemann, Heather T. Stopp
https://doi-org.hacc.idm.oclc.org/10.1111/jasp.12037
Do not include the proxy part of the link (.hacc.idm.oclc.org) in the reference entry. To revise this DOI link:
- Change doi-org to doi.org (change the hyphen to a dot)
- Delete this part: .hacc.idm.oclc.org
That will give you a DOI link that looks like this:
